The real culprit is the chain — specifically, throwing plugins on without understanding the signal flow. You end up with a muddy low end, harsh highs, and a vocal that sits on top of the beat instead of inside it.
Here's what a solid vocal chain actually needs (in order):
A noise gate to remove the background noise
An EQ to remove muddiness and boxiness
A compressor to make the dynamic range consistent
A multiband compressor to shape the tonality of the vocal
That's the foundation. Everything else is flavor.
