The 3 breastfeeding myths that stress out every new mom

After years as an IBCLC (Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant), I've heard the same three myths cause unnecessary panic in almost every new mom I work with. Let's clear them up:

Myth 1: "If it hurts, you're doing it wrong."

Some discomfort in the first week is actually normal as your nipples adjust. What's NOT normal is pain that makes you dread feeding, cracked/bleeding nipples, or pain that doesn't improve after the first 30 seconds of a latch. There's a difference between "adjustment soreness" and "something needs attention."

Myth 2: "You need to pump to know how much baby is getting."

Pump output ≠ what baby transfers. Babies are far more efficient than pumps. Better signs your baby is getting enough: steady weight gain, 6+ wet diapers/day after day 4, and a baby who seems satisfied after feeds.

Myth 3: "If your supply drops, it's too late."

Supply is not a one-way street. It responds to demand at any stage. Yes, even at 3 months when it feels like things shift. Strategic feeding or pumping adjustments can absolutely rebuild supply.

The postpartum period is overwhelming enough without bad information making it harder. If something feels off, trust your gut and ask a professional — not Google at 3am.
