5 things I wish I knew before freelancing as a video editor

Most freelance editors make the same mistakes early on. I burned through months figuring this out — here's the shortcut:

1. Your reel matters less than you think. Clients care about reliability, communication, and turnaround time. A mediocre reel with great client skills beats a showreel god who ghosts on deadlines.

2. Niche down immediately. "I edit videos" means nothing. "I edit long-form YouTube content for tech channels" gets you booked. The more specific, the easier to sell.

3. Stop charging hourly. Project-based pricing lets you earn more as you get faster. Hourly punishes efficiency.

4. Cold outreach works if you lead with value. Don't send "I'm a video editor, hire me." Send a 30-second sample edit of their latest video with notes on what you'd improve. That's how you stand out.

5. Your first 3 clients come from your network. Post on social that you're taking clients. DM creators you admire. The work is out there — you just have to ask.
