Keep tax money apart before spending turns it into stress

Within 24 hours of every invoice, the easiest freelancers move 20% into a separate account — before rent gets a vote.

The Split First System

A dead-simple framework: the moment a client payment lands, move the tax share out. No spreadsheets. No apps. Just one rule that eliminates tax panic for good.

Open a Tax Account, Not a Shared Pool

The core setup: open one dedicated tax account, label it clearly, and never let personal spending touch it. This is the foundation that makes everything else work.

When Tax Money Stays Separate

Tax panic happens because money that belongs to HMRC, the IRS, or your tax authority sits in the same pile as your grocery budget. When you can't see the line between spendable and owed, every purchase feels like a risk. Separation removes the guesswork.

Move Tax Money First — The Practical Habit

Before you pay rent, before you order dinner, before you buy anything — move the tax percentage. It takes 90 seconds and it changes how every pound and dollar feels in your account.

The Outcome

Spendable money sits clearly in one place. Tax money stays untouched in another. No panic. No scrambling. No surprises when the tax bill arrives.

The 90-Second Habit That Stopped Me Panicking About Taxes as a Freelancer

I used to dread January. And April. And basically any month where the words "tax" and "deadline" appeared in the same sentence.

The problem wasn't that I earned too little or spent too much. The problem was I couldn't tell the difference between money I could spend and money I owed.

Every client payment landed in the same account as rent, groceries, subscriptions, and the occasional late-night takeaway. By the time the tax bill arrived, I'd already spent money that was never mine to begin with.

The fix took 90 seconds.

Every time a client payment clears, I move 20% into a separate account before I touch anything else. That's it. No spreadsheet. No app. No complicated system.

Here's what changed:

  • No more tax panic. The money is already set aside. When the bill comes, it's just a transfer — not a crisis

  • Spending feels clean. Everything left in my main account is genuinely mine. No guilt, no second-guessing

  • I stopped "borrowing" from taxes. When it's in a different account with a clear label, the temptation disappears

The key insight: tax panic doesn't come from owing money. It comes from not knowing how much of your money is already spoken for.

If you're a freelancer with irregular income and you've been mixing everything into one pot, try this for one month. Open a second account, label it clearly, and move the tax share first — before rent gets a vote.

I put the full system into a free ebook called the Split First System. It covers exactly how to set up the accounts, what percentage to move, and how to build the habit so it sticks. Grab it free on my page.
