The 5 kitchen tools I use every single day (and the 3 I stopped using)

I've spent years testing kitchen gadgets — from $8 spatulas to $400 blenders. Here's what actually survived daily use in my kitchen.

The 5 I can't live without:

  1. A real chef's knife (not a set — one good 8" knife beats a 15-piece block)

  2. Instant-read thermometer — stopped overcooking meat the day I got one

  3. Cast iron skillet — mine's 6 years old and gets better every month

  4. Bench scraper — costs $5, does the work of 3 other tools

  5. Kitchen scale — baking by weight changed everything

The 3 I ditched:

  • Garlic press (a knife is faster once you learn the technique)

  • Egg slicer (single-use tools are the enemy)

  • That expensive mandoline I was afraid to use

The pattern? The best kitchen tools are simple, durable, and do one thing extremely well. Everything else is clutter.

I write about this every week at Gadget Kitchen — honest reviews, no sponsored picks. Just what actually works.
