The most expensive mistake in knitwear design costs $0 to prevent.

I've seen designers spend 80+ hours on a sweater only to realize the XL doesn't fit because they eyeballed the grading instead of doing the math.

Here's the thing most gauge guides won't tell you: grade rules aren't uniform. The jump from S to M isn't the same as L to XL. And if you're grading above 2XL, the increments shift again — width grades faster than length, armhole depth scales at a fraction of the bust, and your stitch pattern repeat might force compromises that change the silhouette.

I've been coaching knitwear designers through this exact problem — turning raw gauge swatches into full size runs that actually work. The math isn't hard, but it is specific, and getting it right means the difference between a pattern that sells once and one that builds your reputation.

If you've ever wondered why your graded sizes "look right on paper" but fit wrong on bodies, that's a swatch math problem. And it's solvable.
