When I first landed in Germany, I thought English would get me through. It didn't.

Here are 5 phrases I wish someone had drilled into me before I moved:

"Ich hätte gerne..." (I would like...) — Use this at every bakery, restaurant, and Amt. Polite, natural, instantly respected.

"Wo finde ich...?" (Where can I find...?) — Navigating a new city? This is your Swiss Army knife.

"Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?" (Can you please repeat that?) — Germans speak fast. This buys you time without embarrassment.

"Ich bin neu hier." (I'm new here.) — Magic words. People suddenly become 10x more patient and helpful.

"Das verstehe ich nicht." (I don't understand that.) — Honest, direct, and very German. Way better than nodding and pretending.
