5 Resume Mistakes That Get Entry-Level Candidates Auto-Rejected (and how to fix them)

I've reviewed hundreds of entry-level resumes. These 5 mistakes are in almost every single one — and they're all fixable in under 30 minutes.

1. Your resume isn't ATS-compatible

Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes before a human sees them. If you're using fancy templates with columns, text boxes, or graphics, the ATS can't parse it and auto-rejects you.

Fix: Use a single-column layout. Standard fonts. No tables or images. Save as .docx unless the posting says PDF.

2. Your bullets describe duties, not impact

"Responsible for social media management" tells me nothing. Every intern was "responsible for" something.

Fix: Use this formula: [Action verb] + [What you did] + [Measurable result]

āŒ "Managed social media accounts"

āœ… "Grew Instagram following by 2,400 (34%) in 3 months through a data-driven content calendar"

3. You're not matching keywords from the job description

ATS systems score your resume by keyword match. If the job asks for "project management" and you wrote "managed projects," you might not rank.

Fix: Copy the job description into ChatGPT and ask: "Extract the top 15 keywords and skills from this job description." Then make sure 8-10 appear naturally in your resume.

4. Your summary says "hard-working team player"

Every applicant says this. It's meaningless.

Fix: Replace with specifics: "Marketing graduate with internship experience in content strategy and SEO. Grew a startup's blog traffic by 40% in 3 months. Seeking entry-level content marketing roles."

5. You're sending the same resume everywhere

One resume for 50 applications = 50 mediocre applications.

Fix: Keep a master resume, then tailor the summary, top 3 bullets, and skills section for each application. Takes 10 minutes and doubles your callback rate.
