I tracked every dollar I spent for 6 months. Here's what I learned.

6 months ago I started logging every single expense into a spreadsheet. Coffee, subscriptions, gas, groceries — everything.

Here's what surprised me:

Subscriptions were bleeding me dry. I was spending $287/month on things I barely used. Gym I hadn't been to in 3 months. Two streaming services I forgot about. A productivity app I opened once. I canceled 8 subscriptions and saved $194/month instantly.

I had no idea what "eating out" actually cost me. My guess was maybe $200/month. Reality: $478. Seeing that number in a spreadsheet hits different than checking your bank app.

The 50/30/20 rule is a starting point, not gospel. 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings sounds clean but doesn't fit everyone. I had to adjust to 60/20/20 because rent in my city is brutal. The key is having ANY system you actually follow.

The biggest win: I stopped "wondering" where my money went. That anxiety of checking your account balance and being surprised? Gone. When you track it, you control it.

If you've never tracked your spending in a proper template, start this month. Even one month of data changes how you think about money.
