Everyone assumes beginners mess up eyeshadow or eyeliner first. Nope — it's foundation.

Specifically: applying it with the wrong tool for their skin type, and never letting it "melt" into the skin before blending. Cakey, patchy, or gray-looking foundation is almost never about shade matching — it's about technique.

Three quick fixes that changed everything for my students:

1. Warm it up first. Dot foundation on your face, then wait 30 seconds before blending. Product applied cold sits on top of skin instead of melting in.

1. Damp sponge > dry brush for beginners. A slightly damp beauty sponge bounces product into skin instead of pushing it around and creating streaks. Brushes are great once you have control — they're unforgiving when you don't.

1. Build in thin layers, not one thick one. One heavy layer is what causes the "mask" look. Two thin layers, pressed in, always look more natural than one thick one.

I see this same fix work over and over with total beginners. Technique beats products every time — you can have a $60 foundation and still look cakey if the application is off, or a $12 drugstore one and look flawless with good technique.
