The 5-Minute Dead Hang Test That Predicts Your Century Ride Hand Fatigue
Most endurance cyclists blame hand numbness on gloves, bar tape, or bike fit. The real problem is grip endurance — and you can measure exactly where you stand in 5 minutes.
The Protocol
You need a pull-up bar or any overhead bar you can hang from with a full grip.
Test 1: Max Dead Hang (both hands)
Grab the bar with a full overhand grip, shoulder width
Hang with straight arms, feet off the ground
Time until failure
Rest 3 minutes
Test 2: Bar Squeeze Hold
Grab a broomstick or dowel horizontally in front of you at handlebar height
Squeeze at ~70% effort (firm, not death grip)
Hold until your forearms burn out

Why This Matters for Cycling
Your hands are the only contact point you control in real-time on the bike. Unlike saddle pressure (which you set up and forget) or pedal contact (which is clipped in), your hands are constantly modulating:
Steering input — especially on descents and in crosswinds
Braking force — sustained braking on long descents destroys weak grip
Vibration absorption — your forearm flexors are your primary shock absorber
Bar position changes — hoods, drops, tops all load different grip patterns
