The #1 reason people quit learning Spanish (and how to fix it)

You downloaded Duolingo. You finished 30 lessons. You feel good about yourself.

Then someone actually speaks Spanish to you and your brain goes completely blank.

Sound familiar? You're not alone — and it's not your fault.

The problem isn't vocabulary. It's not grammar. It's that most language learning is passive. You're recognizing words, not producing them. Reading sentences, not building them in real time under pressure.

Speaking is a completely different skill than understanding. And the only way to get better at it is to do it — awkwardly, imperfectly, and often.

Here's what actually works:

1. Speak from day one. Don't wait until you're "ready." You'll never feel ready. Start with what you know, even if it's just "Hola, me llamo..." and build from there.

2. Learn phrases, not words. Nobody speaks in isolated vocabulary. Learn "¿Me puedes ayudar?" as a whole chunk, not "poder + ayudar + me."

3. Get real-time feedback. Apps can't hear your accent. They can't tell you that you sound robotic. You need a human who will correct you kindly and immediately.

4. Practice with stakes. Order coffee in Spanish. Ask for directions. Join a conversation group where people are counting on you to show up.

That's exactly what we do at Habla Fluido. Live sessions, real conversations, real feedback. No conjugation worksheets.

If you've been "learning" Spanish for months but still can't hold a 2-minute conversation, the method is the problem — not you.
