Your first abuse rule shouldn't take 3 sprints

Most startups hit their first abuse incident somewhere between Series A and B. A user finds an exploit. Someone starts scraping. Fake accounts show up in batches.

The typical response? A Slack thread, a hastily written regex, a deploy that breaks something else, and a TODO to "build a proper system later."

That TODO never gets done.

Here's what we've learned building detection systems: the hard part isn't writing the rule. It's the lifecycle around it — versioning, testing against production traffic without enforcing, rolling back when it catches false positives, and keeping a paper trail of what changed and why.

The pattern that works:

  • Evidence first. Start from the incident, not from a hypothetical threat model. Real abuse data beats guesswork.

  • Propose, don't deploy. Let automation draft the rule. A human should gate the decision. Always.

  • Test before enforce. Shadow mode against live traffic. See what it would have caught. See what it would have blocked incorrectly.

  • Make it reversible. Every defense should have an undo button. The blast radius of a bad rule is worse than the original abuse.

This is exactly what we built Halation to do. If you're a CTO staring down your first T&S problem and don't want to burn an entire sprint on it — we should talk.

Welcome to Halation

Welcome aboard. Here's how to get started:

1. Connect your cloud — Set up your first environment integration so Halation can read your incident evidence and enforce rules in your customer cloud.

2. Review your first proposal — The agent will analyze your existing incident data and propose your first detection rules. You review, approve, and ship.

3. Join Customer Support chat — Ask questions, share feedback, and connect with other teams using Halation.

We'll be posting platform updates, new detection templates, and best practices right here in this feed.
