Designer houses optimize for mass appeal — safe, inoffensive, easy to reformulate cheaper every few years. Indie perfumers don't have that problem. They're not chasing shelf space at Sephora, so they can use real oud, real rose absolute, ingredients that actually cost money, and build scents that are genuinely distinct.

The tradeoff is discovery is harder. There's no wall of testers to walk down. You have to actually know where to look, and most of these houses sell in tiny batches that sell out fast.
