Why most 'farm-to-table' marketplaces fail small farmers (and what we're doing differently)

I've watched too many wholesale produce platforms take a cut so big the farmer ends up worse off than selling to a local middleman. Here's the actual math that's broken:

Most marketplaces charge 15-30% per transaction PLUS a listing fee PLUS payment processing. A farmer selling $500 of maize a week loses $75-150 before they even see the money.

What we set up instead at Harvest Collective: a flat $9/month membership — no per-sale commission. Farmers list produce and supplies directly (crop, quantity, quality grade, wholesale price), buyers browse and message sellers directly to arrange the deal. We're starting in Uganda and opening it globally, because fair pricing shouldn't depend on which country you farm in.

The real unlock isn't the marketplace though — it's the idea-sharing. Yield and pricing knowledge that a commercial farm in Iowa has taken decades to learn is often completely inaccessible to a smallholder in East Africa, and vice versa (small-plot intercropping techniques that big ag has abandoned but that actually work). Putting both in the same room changes outcomes faster than any subsidy.

If you grow, sell, or buy produce/supplies at any scale, come build this with us.
