Why 90% of dev portfolios look the same (and how to fix it in 20 minutes)

Every junior dev portfolio looks identical. Same gradient hero. Same project cards. Same "About Me" section with a waving hand emoji.

Here's the uncomfortable truth: hiring managers spend 8 seconds on your portfolio. If it looks like a tutorial project, it gets closed.

The fix is simpler than you think:

  1. Kill the hero section. Replace it with a single bold statement about what you solve. Not "Hi, I'm a full-stack developer." Try "I build payment systems that don't break at scale."

  1. Show the code, not the screenshot. Embed a live component. A mini interactive demo beats 10 static images. Use an iframe or a CodeSandbox embed.

  1. Use one accent color. Pick a single neon accent against a dark background. Electric blue on charcoal (#0A0A0C) hits different. Stop using rainbow gradients.

  1. Add a "How I Built This" section. For each project, write 3 sentences about the hardest technical decision you made. This is what senior engineers actually read.

  1. Ship it on a custom domain. yourname.dev costs $12/year. It instantly signals you're serious.

At HasteLab, we build production-ready templates and component libraries specifically designed to make dev portfolios and agency sites stand out. Dark glassmorphism themes, clean React components, and design systems that don't look like a Bootstrap default.

If you're tired of looking like everyone else, come check out what we're building.
