5 things I wish someone told me about anxiety in my early 20s

I spent years thinking anxiety was just "being stressed." It's not. Here's what actually helped me understand it — and what I'd tell my younger self.

1. Anxiety isn't a personality trait.

Saying "I'm just an anxious person" kept me stuck for years. Anxiety is a response, not an identity. You can change your relationship with it.

2. Your phone is making it worse.

Doom scrolling at midnight isn't "winding down." It's flooding your nervous system with cortisol. I started putting my phone in another room at 9pm. Within a week, I was sleeping better and waking up calmer.

3. Breathing exercises feel stupid until they save you.

I rolled my eyes at box breathing for months. Then I tried it during a panic attack on the tube. 4 seconds in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold. It actually worked. Your body can't be in fight-or-flight and deep breathing mode at the same time.

4. Talking about it doesn't make you weak.

The strongest people I know are the ones who said "I'm struggling" out loud. Every time I opened up to someone, I found out they were dealing with the same thing.

5. Small daily habits beat big one-off fixes.

Forget the 30-day transformation. A 10-minute walk, one journal entry, drinking water before coffee — these tiny things compound. Mental health isn't built in a weekend retreat. It's built Tuesday morning at 7am.

If any of this resonates, that's exactly why I built Headspace Hub. It's a space for young adults to actually work on this stuff together — courses, community, and real tools. Not platitudes.

You don't have to figure it out alone.
