5 things I wish someone told me the week after my breakup

The first week after a breakup is chaos. Your brain is foggy, your chest feels heavy, and everyone's advice sounds the same — "just move on" or "time heals everything."

Neither of those helped me. Here's what actually did:

1. Your grief is not weakness — it's proof you loved deeply.

Stop trying to "be strong." Crying in the shower at 2am doesn't make you broken. It makes you human. Let the feelings come through instead of around.

2. Unfollow, mute, archive. Protect your peace ruthlessly.

You don't need to see their stories. You don't need to check who liked their posts. Every time you look, you're reopening the wound. Digital distance is real distance.

3. Write what you can't say out loud.

The things you never got to say? The anger, the confusion, the "I still love you"? Write them. Not to send — to release. A journal doesn't judge you.

4. Your identity didn't leave with them.

You existed before them. You had dreams, favorite songs, inside jokes with friends. Go find those things again. They're still there, just buried under the grief.

5. Healing isn't linear — and that's okay.

Monday you'll feel fine. Tuesday you'll hear "your song" and fall apart. That's not going backwards. That's how healing actually works.
