The fight you keep having is not about the dishes
Most couples I talk to think they have a communication problem. They don't. They have a pattern.
One person brings up a real issue. The other hears an attack. Then it is volume, scorekeeping, and a night on the couch. Next week: same script, different trigger.
If that is your house, here is the move that actually works — not "use I-statements."
Name the pattern, not the person.
In the next fight, say this out loud: "We are in the loop again." That one sentence pulls both of you out of attack/defend and into the same side of the table.
Then ask one question: "What did you need from me in that moment that you did not get?"
You will not like the answer the first time. Ask it anyway. The couples who get out of the loop are the ones who can hear that answer without making it a trial.
I built a 30-day reset around this — four 1-on-1 calls, messaging access, a written plan. $97. If you do the work and it does not help, you get the money back.
The dishes were never the problem. The loop is.
