The 3 branding mistakes that make startups look amateur

I've designed brands for dozens of early-stage companies. The same three mistakes come up over and over — and they're all fixable.

1. Your logo is doing too much.

If your logo needs explanation, it's not working. The best startup logos are simple enough to draw from memory. Think Stripe, not a medieval coat of arms. Ditch the gradients, drop shadows, and clip art. A clean wordmark beats a complicated icon 90% of the time at your stage.

2. You're using 6+ colors with no system.

Pick 2-3 colors max. One primary, one accent, one neutral. Every color should have a job. If you can't explain why a color is in your palette, cut it. Consistency builds trust — and trust is what gets people to pull out their wallet.

3. You're skipping brand guidelines.

A logo file is not a brand. Without guidelines, every new hire, freelancer, or marketing asset slowly drifts off-brand. You end up with a Franken-brand that looks different on every platform. Even a one-page style guide with your colors (hex codes), fonts, logo spacing rules, and tone of voice saves you hundreds of hours of cleanup later.

The fix for all three? Start with clarity. Know what your brand needs to communicate, strip away everything that doesn't serve that, and document the result.

That's what we do at Heavy Head — clean, focused brand identities for startups that want to look like they've been around for years. If your brand needs work, come check us out.
