The Skinny Guy's No-BS Guide to Actually Gaining Weight

I was 6'1" and 135 lbs for years. Eating "a lot" but never gaining. Here's what actually changed everything — and what most hardgainers get wrong.

The #1 mistake: You think you eat a lot. You don't. Track your calories for 3 days and I guarantee you're 800-1200 calories under what you need. Most skinny guys need 3,000-3,500+ calories daily just to START gaining.

The fix is simple (not easy):

  1. Eat before you're hungry. Set alarms. Meal 1 by 8am, Meal 2 by 11am, Meal 3 by 2pm, Meal 4 by 5pm, Meal 5 by 8pm. Non-negotiable.

  1. Liquid calories are your weapon. A shake with whole milk, oats, peanut butter, banana, and whey = 800-1000 cals in 60 seconds. Drink one between meals.

  1. Stop eating "clean" if you can't hit your numbers. White rice > brown rice. Whole milk > skim. Add olive oil to everything. Calorie density matters.

  1. Lift heavy, lift compound. Squats, deadlifts, bench, rows, overhead press. 3-4x per week. Progressive overload. Your body has no reason to grow if you're not forcing it.

  1. Sleep 7-9 hours. Growth hormone peaks during deep sleep. You're literally wasting your meals if you're sleeping 5 hours.

A sample 3,200 cal day:

  • Breakfast: 4 eggs, 2 toast w/ butter, banana, glass of whole milk (750 cal)

  • Shake: Milk, oats, PB, banana, whey (900 cal)

  • Lunch: 8oz chicken thigh, 2 cups rice, avocado (800 cal)

  • Dinner: 8oz ground beef, pasta, olive oil, vegetables (750 cal)

No secrets. No supplements you "need." Just food, consistency, and patience.

I built HeavyPlate because I wish someone had just given me the meal plans and told me exactly what to eat, when, and how much. That's what we do — high-calorie, nutrient-dense recipes designed specifically for people trying to gain weight the healthy way.

The 3,500 Calorie Day That Changed Everything

I spent 2 years trying to gain weight and failing. Here's what actually worked.

The problem was never "eat more." I knew I needed more calories. The problem was that eating 3,500 clean calories a day is genuinely hard when you don't have a system.

Here's the framework I use now:

Meal 1 (7am) — 800 cal

4 eggs scrambled in butter, 2 slices sourdough, 1 avocado, glass of whole milk. Takes 10 minutes.

Meal 2 (10:30am) — 600 cal

Protein smoothie: banana, oats, peanut butter, whole milk, protein powder. Drink it during your commute.

Meal 3 (1pm) — 900 cal

8oz chicken thigh, 2 cups rice, roasted sweet potato, olive oil drizzle. Meal prep this on Sunday.

Meal 4 (4pm) — 500 cal

Trail mix (almonds, cashews, dark chocolate, dried fruit) + Greek yogurt. Zero cooking.

Meal 5 (7:30pm) — 700 cal

Salmon fillet, quinoa, roasted broccoli with garlic butter. The one meal you actually enjoy cooking.

Total: ~3,500 calories, 200g+ protein, all whole foods.

The key insight: most of these meals are either no-cook or batch-preppable. You're not spending hours in the kitchen. You're spending 30 minutes on Sunday and 10 minutes per meal the rest of the week.

Stop winging it. Build a system. The scale will move.
