The one stat most bettors ignore before they ever place a bet

Most people chase picks. Winning bettors chase closing line value (CLV).

Here's the idea: the closing line (the odds right before a game starts) is the market's most accurate price — it's absorbed every sharp bet, every injury update, every piece of public money. If you consistently bet a number better than where the line closes, you're beating the market itself, regardless of whether that individual bet wins or loses.

Quick example: you bet a team at -3 on Monday, and by kickoff the line has moved to -5.5. You got 2.5 points of free value. Do that consistently across hundreds of bets and it's the single biggest predictor of long-term profitability — better than win rate, better than "gut feel" on any one game.

How we use it at HOBA:

  • We track CLV on every single pick we release, not just win/loss

  • We time releases early in the week when possible, because lines move against sharp info as the week goes on

  • We're transparent when we get beat on CLV too — it happens, and pretending otherwise is how people lose trust in "cappers"

If a service only ever shows you a win rate and never shows you closing line value, ask why. Win rate over a small sample can be pure variance. CLV over time can't lie.
