5 Holiday Tablescape Mistakes Event Planners Keep Making

I've styled hundreds of holiday events. Here are the mistakes I see even experienced planners make:

1. Matching everything too perfectly. All-gold or all-red looks flat in photos. Mix metals — gold candlesticks with silver chargers, copper accents with brass. Contrast is what reads as "luxe."

2. Forgetting the nose. Scented candles near food = disaster. But unscented pillar candles with fresh eucalyptus stems? That's the play. Guests notice the smell of a space before the decor.

3. Overcrowding the table center. Leave room for actual food. Your centerpiece should take up no more than 1/3 of the table width. Use elevation (cake stands, risers) instead of sprawl.

4. Ignoring the ceiling. Hanging installations — greenery, ornaments on fishing line, paper lanterns — are the single fastest way to make a basic venue feel expensive. Event planners who skip overhead decor are leaving the biggest impact on the table.

5. Buying retail for every event. You're an event planner, not a homeowner. Wholesale and rental decor cut costs 40-60% without sacrificing quality. Build relationships with 2-3 suppliers and reuse accent pieces across events.

If you're an event planner or host who wants curated seasonal collections, styling guides, and wholesale supplier contacts — that's exactly what we're building at Holiday Luxe Co.
