The vintage Pokémon market is booming, but so are the fakes. After handling hundreds of Base Set holos, here are the 3 things I check every single time:

1. The Rosette Pattern

Real WOTC holos have a distinct rosette dot pattern when you zoom in. Fakes often have a smoother, almost inkjet-quality print. Grab a jeweler's loupe — if the dots look uniform and crisp, it's legit.

2. The Light Test

Hold the card up to a bright light. Real cards have a thin black layer sandwiched between the front and back. Fakes tend to let light bleed through because they skip that core layer.

3. The Font on "HP"

On real Base Set Charizards, the "HP" text has a very specific weight and spacing. Side-by-side with a known authentic card, fakes almost always get this slightly wrong.
