The 5 interior design mistakes that make every room look cheap (and how to fix them)
Most people don't have a budget problem — they have a knowledge problem.
Here are the 5 mistakes I see constantly, even in expensive homes:
1. The rug is too small
If only the legs of your furniture are on it, the room looks disconnected. A rug should be large enough for all furniture legs to sit on it — or at least the front legs.
2. Everything is pushed against the walls
Floating furniture away from the walls creates intimacy and makes a room feel more curated. Rooms with everything against the wall feel like waiting rooms.
3. One overhead light source
A single ceiling light flattens a room. Add floor lamps, table lamps, and accent lights. The goal is layers — ambient, task, and accent.
4. No focal point
Every room needs something to draw the eye first — a fireplace, a piece of art, a statement sofa. Without it, the eye wanders and the room feels unfinished.
5. Colour chosen in isolation
Paint colours look completely different at home than on the chip at the store. Always test a large swatch on your actual wall in natural and artificial light before committing.
Fix these five things and most rooms immediately look like they had a designer involved.
