5 rooms, $200 total — here's how I styled my first apartment

When I moved into my first place, I had zero decor budget and even less taste. Every room felt empty and cold.

So I started researching — what actually makes a room feel "designed" without spending thousands?

Turns out, it comes down to 3 things:

Layered lighting. One overhead light makes any room feel like a dentist's office. Add a floor lamp, a table lamp, or even string lights. Instantly warmer.

Textured textiles. A $15 throw blanket and a couple of cushion covers from a thrift store can make a bare couch look intentional. Mix textures — knit, linen, velvet.

The 60-30-10 color rule. 60% dominant color (walls, big furniture), 30% secondary (rugs, curtains), 10% accent (pillows, art, candles). This one rule eliminates the "nothing goes together" problem.

I styled 5 rooms in my apartment for under $200 total using these principles plus a few AI-assisted layout suggestions.

Inside HomeCraft AI, I break down every technique I used — with AI tools to help you figure out what works for YOUR specific space, budget, and style preferences.

Your first place doesn't have to look like a college dorm. It just needs the right framework.
