The 5 things that turned my insurance claim from chaos into a paid-out check
Filed a home insurance claim last year and almost lost thousands of dollars because I couldn't prove what I'd already told my adjuster.
Here's what actually moved the needle:
Timestamp everything. Photos of damage before you touch anything — date-stamped, room by room. Adjusters discount claims they can't verify.
Log every call. Who you spoke to, when, and what they said they'd do. Insurers "forget" verbal promises constantly. A dated log turns their word against them.
Track your out-of-pocket spend separately from the claim total. Temporary repairs, hotel stays, replacement essentials — these get missed if they're buried in one big folder.
Get contractor estimates in writing, fast. The first lowball offer from the insurer is a starting point, not the number. You need paper to counter it.
One command file, not five apps. Spreadsheet + email + photos folder + notes app = things fall through the cracks right when you need them for an appeal.
I ended up building myself a single system for #5 that folds in 1-4 automatically — it's called Claim Command Center if anyone's mid-claim and wants to skip the mess I went through.
