Most HYROX athletes lose more time to bad pacing than to being "not fit enough." Two mistakes I see constantly when coaching people through their first Open race:

1. Torching Km 1. Fresh legs + adrenaline make an aggressive first kilometer feel easy. It never is — the cost shows up two or three stations later as a heart rate that won't come down. Your normal 5K pace is NOT your HYROX pace, because every km after the first is run on top of a compromised station, not from fresh legs. Run Km 1 at (or slightly under) your planned average. If it feels too easy, that's the point.

2. Redlining every station "as fast as possible." On wall balls especially — going unbroken until failure feels tough, but it's usually slower than a planned, broken rep scheme (e.g. 3x10 with short resets taken before form breaks down, not after). Failure reps are slow and sloppy, and the recovery that follows is uncontrolled and long. A boringly consistent pace almost always beats a heroic-then-crashed one.

The fix for both: pick a target pace and rep scheme before race day, based on real training data — not vibes on the start line.

Put together a full coach-built breakdown of this (pacing system, station-by-station strategy, 4-week training plan, race-day checklist) if anyone wants to go deeper — happy to answer questions here either way.
