5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before Becoming a Foster Parent

I've been in the foster care world long enough to know that most people start this journey with a heart full of love and a head full of questions. Here's what I wish someone had sat me down and told me on day one:

1. The licensing process is a marathon, not a sprint. Background checks, home studies, training hours — it feels endless. But every step exists to protect the kids. Lean into it.

2. You don't have to be perfect. Caseworkers aren't looking for a perfect home. They're looking for a safe, stable, and loving one. Your house doesn't need to look like a magazine.

3. The kids' behavior is communication. When a child acts out, they're telling you something they don't have words for yet. Learning to listen differently changed everything for me.

4. Self-care isn't selfish — it's survival. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Build your support system before your first placement, not after.

5. Community is everything. The foster parents who thrive are the ones who don't try to do it alone. Find your people. Ask for help. Show up for each other.

If you're thinking about fostering, in the middle of it, or just want to support families who are — we built this community for you. Come join us.
