Free IELTS Speaking Tip: The A-E-X Framework for Part 1

Most IELTS candidates lose marks in Part 1 because their answers are too short, too rehearsed, or both. Here's the framework I teach my students to fix that instantly.

The A-E-X Method

Every Part 1 answer should follow three steps:

A – Answer → Respond directly in one sentence.

E – Elaborate → Add a reason, detail, or explanation.

X – eXtend → Go one layer deeper with a contrast, example, or result.

Example

Question: Do you like cooking?

A: "I actually enjoy it quite a bit." E: "I find it's a great way to decompress after work — there's something almost meditative about following a recipe." X: "That said, I'm far more adventurous at weekends. On a Tuesday night, it's pasta. On a Saturday, I might attempt a Thai curry from scratch."

That answer takes about 20 seconds, hits Band 7+ criteria for fluency, uses a discourse marker ("that said"), includes a collocation ("decompress after work"), and shows range.

This is just one technique from the full Advanced IELTS Speaking Score Prep course, which covers all three parts of the Speaking test with frameworks, practice simulations, vocabulary banks, and a complete test-day strategy.

If you're targeting Band 7 or higher, this is the system that gets you there. 🎯

Welcome to IELTS Speaking Pro 🎯

Welcome to Advanced IELTS Speaking Score Prep — you've made a serious investment in your future, and this course is designed to pay it back many times over.

What's Inside

A 5-chapter, 16-lesson structured programme covering everything from band descriptors to full mock exams:

  • Chapter 1 — Test format, scoring criteria, and the mistakes that cap you at Band 6

  • Chapter 2 — Fluency with discourse markers, the PEEL method, and filler elimination

  • Chapter 3 — Topic-specific vocabulary, collocations, idioms, and paraphrasing

  • Chapter 4 — Complex grammar structures, intonation, and self-correction strategies

  • Chapter 5 — Full exam simulations (Parts 1, 2, 3) and your test-day checklist

How to Get the Most Out of This

  1. Go in order. Lessons are sequential — each one builds on the last.

  2. Record yourself. Every simulation tells you to record and listen back. This is the single most effective thing you can do.

  3. Use the Study Group Chat. Ask questions and connect with other candidates.

Let's get to work. Your Band 7+ score is waiting. 💪
