Why Your Western Horoscope Might Be Wrong (And What Jyotish Gets Right)

Most people know their Sun sign from Western astrology. Aries, Taurus, Gemini — you've seen it everywhere.

But here's something most people don't know: Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses a different zodiac system, and your sign is likely different.

Western astrology uses the Tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons. Jyotish uses the Sidereal zodiac, aligned with the actual fixed stars in the sky. Because of a phenomenon called ayanamsha (the precession of the equinoxes), these two systems have drifted apart by about 24 degrees.

That means if you're a "Sagittarius" in Western astrology, you're likely a Scorpio in Jyotish. A Western "Leo" is often a Vedic Cancer.

Why does this matter?

Jyotish doesn't just look at your Sun sign. It emphasizes your Moon sign (your emotional nature) and your Ascendant (how you interact with the world). It uses a precise dasha system to map out the timing of major life events — career shifts, relationships, health, and spiritual awakening.

The Rishis who developed this system thousands of years ago mapped 27 lunar mansions (nakshatras), each with its own deity, shakti (power), and life purpose. Your nakshatra reveals things about you that no Sun sign ever could.

If you've ever felt like your horoscope didn't quite fit — this might be why.

I teach Jyotish from the ground up inside Illumaara. We start with the fundamentals and go deep into chart reading, planetary periods, and remedial measures. No fluff, just the real tradition.
