The 5-minute anxiety reset I wish I learned years ago
Most anxiety advice is useless. "Just breathe." "Think positive." Cool, thanks.
Here's what actually works when your chest is tight and your brain won't stop — a 5-minute reset you can do anywhere:
Step 1: Name it (30 seconds)
Say out loud or in your head: "I'm feeling anxious right now." Not "I AM anxious" — you're not anxiety, you're experiencing it. That distinction matters.
Step 2: Ground with 5-4-3-2-1 (2 minutes)
5 things you can see
4 things you can touch
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
This pulls your nervous system out of threat mode and back into the present.
Step 3: Slow exhale breathing (2 minutes)
Inhale for 4 counts. Exhale for 8. The longer exhale activates your vagus nerve and tells your body the danger isn't real.
Step 4: Move one muscle group (30 seconds)
Squeeze your fists tight for 5 seconds, then release. Feel the contrast between tension and relaxation. That's your body remembering how to let go.
This is just one of the tools inside The Inner Work Toolkit — a collection of practical wellness guides for women who want real strategies, not platitudes.
No fluff. Just frameworks that work.
