Why Net-30 Payment Terms Are Costing You Thousands (And What to Use Instead)

Most freelancers and small business owners default to Net-30 on their invoices without thinking twice. It's what everyone does, right?

Here's the problem: Net-30 doesn't actually mean you get paid in 30 days. On average, Net-30 invoices get paid in 45-60 days. That's 1-2 months of your money sitting in someone else's account.

The Real Cost of Net-30

Let's say you invoice $5,000/month:

  • At Net-30 (actual ~45 days), you're floating $7,500 at any given time

  • At Net-15 (actual ~20 days), you're floating $3,300

  • That's $4,200 back in your pocket at all times

Now multiply that across a full year of invoicing. The cash flow difference is staggering.

3 Things You Can Do Right Now

1. Switch to Net-15 for new clients. Most clients won't even push back. They're used to paying on whatever terms you set. The key is setting the expectation upfront, not after the work is done.

2. Add an early payment discount. "2/10 Net-15" means the client gets a 2% discount if they pay within 10 days. It sounds small, but it works — studies show early payment discounts accelerate payment by an average of 12 days.

3. Include specific late fee language. Not "late fees may apply" — that's unenforceable in most states. You need exact percentages, grace periods, and compounding terms written into your contract AND your invoice.

The Bottom Line

Your payment terms aren't just administrative details. They're one of the most powerful cash flow levers in your business. Most people never optimize them because nobody teaches this stuff.

I built a 30-day cohort that walks you through everything — from choosing the right payment window to writing bulletproof late fee clauses to building a complete collections escalation strategy. If cash flow is a pain point, it's worth a look.
