The 3 Mistakes Every Beginner Boxer Makes (and How to Fix Them)
I've trained hundreds of beginners. The same mistakes show up every single time.
1. Dropping the hands after throwing.
Your guard isn't optional — it's survival. Every punch you throw, your other hand stays glued to your chin. Period. Drill this until it's automatic: throw a jab, check that your right hand is still at your temple. Repeat 500 times.
2. Trying to hit hard before learning to hit clean.
Power comes from technique, not muscle. A technically clean straight right from a 130lb fighter will hurt more than a wild haymaker from someone twice their size. Focus on rotation, weight transfer, and snapping the punch back. The power comes naturally.
3. Holding their breath.
Breathing is your engine. Exhale sharply on every punch. Inhale during defense. Your gas tank is the difference between surviving round 3 and folding.
Fix these three things and you'll look better than 90% of people who walk into a boxing gym.
