The 3 Mistakes Every Beginner Makes in Their First 90 Days at the Gym
I've been training for years and coaching beginners for most of that time. The pattern is always the same — people show up motivated, do the wrong things, and quit within 3 months.
Here are the 3 mistakes I see every single time:
1. Program hopping
You don't need a new routine every week. You need ONE simple program and the discipline to run it for 12 weeks. Progressive overload on 5-6 compound movements will build more muscle than any "chest day" you found on TikTok.
2. Obsessing over supplements before nailing the basics
Pre-workout, creatine, BCAAs — none of it matters if you're sleeping 5 hours a night and eating 1,200 calories. Fix your sleep, hit your protein target (0.7-1g per lb of bodyweight), and eat enough food. That's 90% of the game.
3. Going too hard, too fast
The goal of your first few months isn't to destroy yourself. It's to build the HABIT. Consistency at 70% effort beats burnout at 100%. Train 3-4x/week, leave 1-2 reps in the tank, and show up again tomorrow.
If this resonates, I write about this stuff every week in my newsletter — training programs, nutrition breakdowns, and the mental side of building a fitness habit that actually sticks.
