The #1 mistake beginners make prepping for their first strongman meet
Ran a lot of first-time competitors through event prep, and the same mistake shows up over and over: people train max-effort every session instead of practicing the events.
Strongman isn't just "get strong then show up." The events have technical skill components that don't transfer from generic gym lifts:
Atlas stones — most beginners fail on hip/lap technique, not strength. Missing the lap turns a 150lb stone into a fight.
Yoke walks — bad bracing and foot turnover cost more time than raw carrying strength ever will.
Log press — cleaning the log efficiently saves energy you need for the actual press.
If you're training for your first meet, spend at least 2 sessions a week practicing the actual implements you'll see on competition day, not just their barbell equivalents. Technique reps under fatigue are what separate a smooth meet day from a disaster.
What's the event you're most nervous about for your first show? Drop it below — happy to give pointers.
