The 3 exercises busy people waste the most time on (and what to do instead)
Most gym routines are designed for people with unlimited time. If you've got 45 minutes between meetings, you can't afford to waste a single set.
Here are the 3 biggest time-wasters I see every week:
1. Isolated arm curls as a primary exercise
Unless you're a bodybuilder, bilateral compound movements (chin-ups, rows) hit your biceps harder AND train your back. Two-for-one.
2. Long steady-state cardio for fat loss
30 minutes on the elliptical burns ~250 calories. A 15-minute circuit of kettlebell swings, push-ups, and goblet squats burns more AND builds muscle. Time is your scarcest resource — spend it wisely.
3. Machine-only routines
Machines isolate muscles, which means more exercises to cover the same ground. Free weights and bodyweight movements recruit more muscle per rep. Fewer exercises, same (or better) results.
The theme: compound > isolation, intensity > duration.
If you want weekly breakdowns like this — training, nutrition, and recovery built for people who don't live at the gym — IronBrief goes deep on it every week.
