The 3 exercises every beginner should master before anything else

Most beginners walk into the gym and go straight to the machines. Nothing wrong with that — but if you want to actually build a physique that lasts, you need to get good at three movements first.

1. The Squat

Not because it's trendy. Because it trains your entire lower body, core stability, and teaches you how to move under load. Start with goblet squats. Get your depth right before you touch a barbell.

2. The Bench Press

The king of upper body development. But here's what nobody tells beginners — your setup matters more than the weight. Retract your shoulder blades, plant your feet, and control the bar. You'll out-bench people lifting twice your weight within months.

3. The Deadlift

Nothing builds real-world strength like picking heavy things off the floor. Start light, learn the hip hinge, and your entire posterior chain will thank you.

Master these three and you've built a foundation that compounds forever. Most "advanced" programs are just variations of these movements.

I break down programming, nutrition, and mindset for beginner lifters every week inside IronMind. If you're serious about building your first real physique — this is where you start.
