I spent years as a hobbyist before I started getting paid for my work. Here's what I'd tell myself if I could go back:

1. Your portfolio matters more than your gear.

I shot my first paid gig on a crop sensor with a kit lens. Nobody asked what camera I used. They asked to see my work. Stop upgrading and start shooting.

2. Learn to edit with intention, not presets.

Presets are training wheels. They'll make your work look like everyone else's. Learn what each slider does, develop your own look, and you'll stand out instantly.

3. Consistency beats perfection.

Posting one solid image a week on Instagram will grow your audience faster than disappearing for months to create a "perfect" portfolio.

4. Pricing is the hardest skill to learn.

You will undercharge. Everyone does. The sooner you set a minimum rate and stick to it, the sooner clients start respecting your time.

5. Find a mentor or a community.

Photography can be isolating. Having someone to review your work, push you creatively, and hold you accountable will accelerate your growth more than any course or YouTube video.
