5 mistakes small brands make when sourcing manufacturers (and how to avoid them)

Most small brands lose thousands on their first manufacturing run because they skip the basics. After sourcing for dozens of brands, here are the 5 biggest mistakes I see:

1. Going with the first supplier on Alibaba

The first result isn't the best — it's the one that paid for placement. Always get 5+ quotes and verify each factory independently.

2. Skipping sample rounds

Never go straight to bulk. Order 2-3 sample rounds minimum. The $200 you spend on samples saves you $20,000 in bad inventory.

3. Not defining specs clearly enough

If your spec sheet is vague, the factory will fill in the gaps however they want. Materials, tolerances, pantone colors — spell everything out.

4. Ignoring MOQ negotiations

Most factories list MOQs higher than their actual minimum. Push back. Many will do 50-100 units for a first order if you show long-term potential.

5. No quality inspection before shipment

Always hire a third-party inspector or get a pre-shipment video walkthrough. Once it ships, returns are nearly impossible.

I help small brands avoid all of this. If you're looking for a sourcing partner who's been through the trenches, check out what I offer.
