Why most beginners quit dance in the first month (and how to not be one of them)

I've taught jazz dance to total beginners for years, and the #1 reason people quit isn't lack of talent — it's that they expect to look good immediately.

Here's the truth: your first class will feel awkward. Your second class will still feel awkward. Somewhere around class 4-6, your body starts remembering the patterns before your brain has to think about them. That's when it clicks and it stops feeling like work.

The people who stick around aren't the naturally coordinated ones — they're the ones who show up anyway on the weeks it feels clumsy. Consistency beats talent every time in dance.

If you've been thinking about trying a class but keep telling yourself 'I'll start when I'm less busy' or 'I'm not coordinated enough' — that's exactly the mindset that keeps people on the sidelines forever. You don't need rhythm to start. You need reps.

Started Jazz Collective for exactly this reason: a no-judgment space for beginners to get those reps in. Would love to have you if this resonates.
