The 3 economy mistakes killing your Balatro runs before Ante 6

Most Balatro players hit a wall around Ante 5-6 and blame RNG. It's almost never RNG.

After hundreds of hours and countless runs, the same three economy mistakes show up over and over:

1. Buying jokers too early in the run.

That first shop is tempting. You see a decent joker, you grab it. But early money compounds — $5 saved in Ante 1 can mean $15+ by Ante 4 through interest alone. Unless a joker fundamentally changes your scoring trajectory right now, banking that cash is almost always correct.

2. Not understanding when to skip blinds.

Skipping a blind isn't just about the tag reward. It's about the opportunity cost of playing. If your hand is already strong enough to carry you through the boss, that skip tag + the interest you keep from not spending resources is pure profit. The best players skip aggressively in the early game.

3. Holding too many cards "just in case."

Your deck is a probability machine. Every card that doesn't serve your primary strategy is diluting your draws. Selling cards feels wrong, but trimming your deck to 35-40 focused cards dramatically increases the odds of hitting the combos that actually matter.

Fix these three things and you'll notice your runs consistently lasting longer — and that's before we even talk about joker synergies.

I break down strategies like this twice a week at Joker's Edge. If you're the type of player who wants to understand every hidden system in this game, come check it out.
