Why I built a themed restaurant membership instead of just a loyalty card

Started a sushi spot with a hidden-leaf-village theme (Konoha Sushi) and kept running into the same problem every restaurant has: regulars have zero reason to come back more than a punch card gives them, and there's no way to actually build community around the food.

So instead of a generic loyalty program, I built a one-time VIP membership. $49, lifetime badge, and it unlocks three things:

  1. A private chat where members find out about secret menu items before anyone else

  2. Priority seating without needing to beg the host stand

  3. First dibs on themed pop-up events

The unlock for me: people don't just want a discount, they want to feel like they're part of something. A themed restaurant already has built-in lore — leaning into that with an actual membership (not just a mailing list) turned casual visitors into people who talk about the place unprompted.

If you run a restaurant or any local business with a fanbase, the lesson translates: stop discounting, start including.
