Why I stopped chasing 'passive income' hype and started publishing on KDP instead
Most people get into Amazon KDP because they saw a screenshot of someone's royalty dashboard. I got in because I ran the actual math.
Here's the thing nobody tells you upfront: KDP isn't passive, and it isn't fast. But it is one of the few businesses where $0 in inventory cost can turn into a real, compounding asset — every book you publish keeps selling long after you've stopped touching it.
A few things I've learned publishing low-content and niche books:
Niche research beats design skill. A boring notebook in an underserved niche (think: 'wedding planning for stepmoms' or 'blood sugar tracker for type 2 diabetics') will outsell a beautifully designed generic journal every time.
Your first 5 books will probably flop. That's fine. KDP rewards volume + iteration, not perfection. Treat each book as a $0-cost experiment.
Categories and keywords are 80% of your traffic. Amazon's search algorithm is the real customer you're designing for, not the end reader — at least until they click.
Royalties are backloaded. Month 1 might net you $12. Month 6, with 30 books live, that same effort can be $1,500+/mo. It's a portfolio game.
We're building KDP Launchpad to shortcut the trial-and-error part — sharing the exact niche research and publishing workflow we use. If you're curious or already publishing, drop a comment — happy to talk shop.
