The 5 Money Rules Nobody Teaches You (That Changed Everything for Me)

I spent years living paycheck to paycheck before I figured out these 5 rules. Sharing them here because everyone deserves to know this.

Rule 1: Track before you budget.

Most people try to create a budget first. That's backwards. Track every dollar for 30 days. The awareness alone changes your spending.

Rule 2: Automate everything.

Willpower is limited. The moment your paycheck hits, savings should move automatically. If you have to "decide" to save each month, you won't.

Rule 3: The 24-hour rule kills impulse spending.

Before any non-essential purchase over $20, wait 24 hours. Most of the time you'll forget about it. Saves $200-500/month.

Rule 4: Emergency fund comes before debt payoff.

Build a $1,000 buffer first. Without it, every unexpected expense goes on credit cards and you spiral deeper.

Rule 5: Compound interest is the real cheat code.

$200/month invested starting at 25 becomes $632,000 by 65. Start at 35, it's only $227,000. Same amount. $405,000 gap. Time is literally money.

I built a full 30-day system around these principles — 16 step-by-step lessons for people ready to take control of their finances.

The 3 online businesses I'd start as a broke student in 2026

Most "make money online" advice assumes you have capital, free time, and zero responsibilities.

Students have none of that. You've got classes, maybe a part-time job, and $47 in your account.

So here are 3 models that actually work on a student budget and schedule:

1. Skill-based freelancing

Pick ONE skill (copywriting, video editing, web design). Learn it in 2-3 weeks using free resources. Start charging $50-100/project on day one. You don't need to be an expert — you just need to be better than the business owner who has no time to do it themselves.

2. Digital products

Write what you know. Create a template, guide, or toolkit that solves a specific problem. Sell it for $10-30. Zero inventory, zero shipping, infinite margin. I've seen students clear $500/month with a single Notion template.

3. Content → Community

Start posting about something you're genuinely interested in. Build an audience of 1,000 people. Then create a paid community where you go deeper. This takes longer but compounds harder than anything else.

The biggest mistake? Trying all three at once. Pick one. Go all in for 90 days. Adjust from there.

I wrote a full breakdown of how to execute each of these step-by-step in The Student Startup Blueprint. It's $19 and it's everything I wish I had when I started.
