The one thing that actually gets junior designers promoted to senior

I've reviewed hundreds of junior designer portfolios. The ones that get promoted aren't the ones with the prettiest Dribbble shots — they're the ones who can explain why a decision was made.

Here's the gap I see over and over: junior designers ship the visual, senior designers ship the reasoning. If your case studies read like "I made the button orange because it looked nice," you'll stay junior. If they read "I made the button orange because it needed to stand out against a low-contrast background and testing showed a 12% lift in click-through," you're already thinking like a senior.

Three things that move the needle fastest:

  1. Annotate your process, not just your output. Screenshot your messy explorations, not just the final polished frame.

  2. Get critiqued by people ahead of you. Feedback from your manager alone isn't enough — you need designers who've already made the jump you're trying to make.

  3. Build one deep case study, not ten shallow ones. A single project broken down end-to-end (problem, constraints, iterations, outcome) beats a portfolio full of pretty mockups.

I started Keyframe School because I kept seeing talented juniors get stuck for the same fixable reasons. If you want structured critique and a track built specifically for the junior-to-senior jump, come find us.
