I've spent time watching non-Arab Muslims try to learn Quranic Arabic, and almost everyone makes the same mistake: they start with grammar textbooks written for linguists, not for someone who just wants to open the Mus'haf and understand what they're reading.

Here's what actually works, in order:

1. Master the script and sounds first — don't skip this. If you can't instantly recognize a letter's shape in all its forms, everything after this will feel like decoding a cipher instead of reading.

1. Learn harakat (vowel marks) before grammar rules. The Quran is fully vocalized. Most learners jump into i'rab (grammatical case endings) before they can even read a vocalized word fluently. Fix the reading first.

1. Learn vocabulary in Quranic frequency order, not textbook order. Around 100 root words make up roughly half of the Quran's text. Learn those first and your comprehension jumps dramatically faster than memorizing a random 500-word list.

1. Parse real ayat from day one of grammar. Don't learn grammar in the abstract — apply every rule to an actual verse immediately. It sticks because it's tied to meaning you actually care about.
