The 3 things I wish I knew before starting my first online store
I wasted months and hundreds of dollars figuring this out the hard way. Here's what actually matters:
1. Don't pick a product — pick a problem.
Everyone starts by browsing AliExpress looking for "winning products." That's backwards. Find a group of people with a specific frustration, then find the product that solves it. The product doesn't sell itself — the problem does.
2. Your first store doesn't need to be perfect.
I spent 3 weeks tweaking my Shopify theme before I ran a single ad. Meanwhile, people with ugly stores were making sales because they actually launched. Get a clean template, add your products, and go live. You can optimize later.
3. Start with $10-20/day on ads, not $100.
You're not trying to go viral on day one. You're trying to learn what messaging resonates with your audience. Small budgets = fast feedback loops without blowing your savings.
The biggest misconception about e-commerce is that you need a lot of money to start. You don't. You need a clear plan and the discipline to follow it.
I built kingpin to give beginners exactly that — a step-by-step system to go from zero to first sale without the guesswork.
