The truth about thread count (and why you've been lied to)

Thread count is the biggest marketing scam in the bedding industry.

Here's what actually determines how good your sheets feel:

Fibre quality matters more than thread count.

A 300TC sheet made from long-staple Egyptian cotton will outlast and outfeel a 1,000TC sheet made from short-staple blended cotton. Every time.

Manufacturers inflate thread counts by counting each individual ply of a twisted yarn as a separate thread. That 1,200TC set you paid €80 for? It's probably a 400TC sheet with twisted 3-ply yarns. The math is fake.

What to actually look for:

  • Long-staple cotton (Egyptian, Pima, or Supima)

  • Single-ply weave

  • 200–400 TC range (sweet spot)

  • Percale for crisp and cool. Sateen for soft and warm.

The bedding industry spends millions keeping you focused on the wrong number.

At Laid In Luxury, we cut through all of it — guides, curated picks, and exclusive member deals on bedding that's actually worth buying.
