The one skill that gets you hired as a landscape designer (most beginners skip it)

Most people learning landscape design obsess over plant knowledge. Latin names, seasonal rotations, soil requirements. It's important — but it's not what gets you work.

The skill that actually gets you hired is being able to explain WHY a space works.

Clients don't hire designers who know a lot. They hire designers who can walk into a garden and immediately tell them: what's creating the problem, what the fix looks like, and what it will cost. That's a spatial reasoning skill, not a botanical one.

Here's how I'd build it if I were starting over:

  1. Sketch every outdoor space you enter. Not to make art — just to force your brain to process the proportions, the sightlines, the flow. You'll start seeing design problems everywhere within a few weeks.

  1. Study finished gardens, not just plant lists. Find 10 gardens you love (online is fine) and reverse-engineer them. What creates the sense of enclosure? Why does the path curve there? What's the focal point and how was it made?

  1. Talk to one potential client before you're "ready." It doesn't matter if you can't take the project yet. The conversation will teach you more about what clients actually want than any course module.

The people who break into landscape design fastest aren't the ones who studied the hardest. They're the ones who got in front of real problems early.

Drop a comment if you're working through this — happy to point you toward what to focus on first.
